AI apps

Last updated: October 29, 2026

Connect Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app to heybudget, and it can answer questions about your money and, if you allow it, record things for you: “add this receipt”, “how did we do on groceries this month?”, “am I on track for Norway?”.

heybudget doesn’t include an AI of its own. You bring the one you already use, through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Who can use it

AI apps can work in piggy banks on a paid plan (Solo, Couple or Household). You need a heybudget account; the AI signs in as you and sees only what you can see. Other members’ private accounts stay hidden.

How to connect

Claude: in Settings › Connectors, choose heybudget from the directory, or add a custom connector with the URL https://heybudget.app/mcp. Then select Connect.

ChatGPT: in Settings › Apps, choose heybudget from the directory, or add it with the URL https://heybudget.app/mcp.

Other apps: add https://heybudget.app/mcp as a remote MCP server. Sign-in uses OAuth, so no passwords or keys are pasted anywhere.

heybudget then asks you to sign in and to approve the connection. Leave Allow changes off for read-only access, or turn it on to let the AI add and change things.

What it can do

Always (read-only):

  • List your piggy banks, accounts with their balances (and growth, for savings and investments), categories and payment methods
  • Search and filter transactions
  • Show a month’s budgets: spent, left, and how far through the month it is
  • List goals with their progress, pace and whether they’re on track
  • Show cash flow for a period, by month and by category, as on the Insights page

Only with Allow changes:

  • Add transactions, one or up to 500 at a time, e.g. from a receipt or a bank statement
  • Change or delete a transaction
  • Set or delete a budget
  • Create a goal, record progress on it, change its target, or pause, cancel or resume it
  • Create an account, category or payment method
  • Update what a savings or investment account is worth
  • Invite someone to a piggy bank you own

Your AI app asks you before it changes or deletes something that’s already there.

Examples

  • “What did we spend on eating out last month, and how does it compare with the month before?”
  • “Here’s my receipt from Costco. Add it as one expense under Groceries, paid with the debit card.”
  • “Am I on track for my Norway goal? If not, how much should I put aside each month?”
  • “Set a $400 budget for Groceries for next month.”

Seeing and removing access

Settings › Connected apps lists every connected AI app and the recent changes each one made. Disconnect one there at any time; it loses access straight away.
